Jerry the Mouse

My preface to this story: don't get grossed out. We keep our apartment very clean.

A few months ago Jonathan woke up to find a big water bug by our front door. Luckily I was still in bed, so I didn't have to see it. Insects are incredibly disgusting to me. Thankfully our building employs an exterminator to stop by every apartment on the second Saturday of each month. On his very next visit he sprayed our apartment with insect repellant and tossed sticky pads underneath our oven and refrigerator, and we haven't seen an anything since...

until this past weekend.

Jonathan and I were in the kitchen, and we heard a little squeaking noise about every thirty seconds. At first I thought it was the floor, but once we figured out it wasn't that, I dropped to my hands and knees. Jonathan brought a flash light, and I started my search under the oven. Nothing. Only dust balls. I checked under our small table. Nothing. Finally, I looked under the refrigerator. As I flashed my light to see what I could find the squeak came again. I found the culprit - a sad, cute baby mouse awkwardly trapped on the sticky pad. Oddly enough, rodents don't give me the heeby-jeebies like insects do. I felt so sorry for the innocent mouse. Jonathan laughed and grabbed the camera as a couple tears skimmed my cheeks. Poor Jerry.

Just to warn you... where there is one there are many. Don't fall for their "but I'm just a little mouse" act! Last year we caught one, and thought we took care of the problem. Not even close! over one weekend we caught 9 mice, and continued to find new droppings every morning. (Granted we were on the first floor, right above the garbage room, across the street from a park, and had a huge gap under the front door--not that mice need a huge gap.) We had the exterminators coming regularly patching holes (basically steel wool), telling us to empty the closets, and supplying us with uncounted traps.

Oh man, those traps! The squeaking of the mouse on the trap has got to be one of my least favorite noises. Good luck getting rid of them-- ugh!

Oh you are braver than me, I hate insects and mice! I would have died!

Same comment as Brekster. My second place in the city had a mouse problem. By the time I left, we (we meaning the exterminator) had filled four holes. One weekend when we were gone, all 8 of our traps got filled. They sure are cute, but so gross and they eat you food, bring disease and (gasp) attract insects.

Sorry Jerry, it's a survival of the fittest world out there and you really should have chosen to be a field mouse. You are not fit to be in my apartment!

Ohhh he's so cute! I would have felt bad for him too! But then the thought of having a mouse roaming around the house without my consent would kind of creep me out.

Hi Jamie!

I came across your blog today through Amy Blake's blog. Anyway, looks like you are doing great living in NYC. I did hear about your dad and I'm glad he's doing o.k. My blog is private, but if you send me your e-mail address to adaire017@yahoo.com, I'll send you an invite. It would be fun to stay in touch.

It's too bad that Jerry was a nasty rodent, he is kinda cute! It made me remember hunting down a mouse at your parents' house, we were all on our hands and knees trying to catch their mouse (will call him Larry). Larry was hidden in the cushions of the couch and we had cups and bowls to try to catch him when he came running out. I was nearly crying from laughing so hard! Ahh, Memories... :-) PS- thanks for your sweet little note, you always know how to make my day and bring a smile to my face! WE sure love and miss you guys!
